The foundation uses specific criteria to ensure that the programs it supports are in line with its goals to improve Los Angles communities.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements for a Grant?

The foundation considers applications that are consistent with current program priorities and goals. Eligible applicants are:

  • Nonprofit agencies with evidence of tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and not classified as a private foundation.
  • Located within and primarily serve residents of Los Angeles County, except for regional, statewide or national public policy efforts that may benefit a substantial portion of the local population.
  • Operated and organized so that they do not discriminate in the hiring of staff or in providing services on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin or disability.

What Are the Limitations for Funding?

In general, the foundation will not consider funding the following:

  • Concurrent or more than three consecutive grants to the same organization.
  • Direct assistance for the personal needs of an individual (not including the Fellowships for Visual Artists and the Joan Palevsky Fellowship).
  • Annual fundraising campaigns.
  • Sponsorship of one-time, special events or one-time sponsorships.
  • Endowments. Nonprofit endowment services are available.
  • Existing obligations, or to replenish other sources used to pay for such expenses.
  • Equipment, unless it is integral to accomplishing a stated organizational objective.
  • Sectarian purposes (i.e., programs that promote or require a religious doctrine).
  • Political organizations or campaigns.
  • Duplication of existing programs or services in geographic locations offered by other organizations.
  • Feature films, documentaries or video projects.

What We Emphasize

Through its competitive grantmaking, the California Community Foundation seeks grant proposals that incorporate:

MEASURABLE RESULTS: To foster long-term solutions that address root causes of social, economic and educational inequity. CCF recognizes that grantmaking and program related investments should achieve progress with measurable and specific results. In doing so, the foundation maximizes benefits for residents and communities through its grants.

COMPREHENSIVE APPROACHES: Even though the foundation has five specific priority areas -- arts, human development, education, health care and neighborhood revitalization -- it strongly promotes efforts that seek to address local conditions through integrated approaches.

UNDERSERVED PEOPLE AND PLACES: To ensure the inclusion of underrepresented geographic areas and individuals, the foundation encourages applications from organizations that represent and serve people and/or communities historically underserved by mainstream funding sources.

INSTITUTION BUILDING: Instead of traditional project-specific grantmaking, the foundation aims to strengthen Los Angeles County's nonprofit sector by providing core operating support to organizations that contribute to the solutions of local issues.
